Singleness Is for Everyone — Lecture 1

Mar 27, 2026    Devin White

What does the Church really have to say about singleness? And what does Scripture actually teach?

In this opening lecture, we explore two of the most important biblical texts on singleness — Jesus's words in Matthew 22 and Paul's extended teaching in 1 Corinthians 7 — alongside the witness of the early Church through figures like Augustine of Hippo, whose own conversion was sparked by the example of single Christians living lives of radical devotion to God.

Together, we'll examine why both Scripture and Christian tradition present singleness not merely as an option, but as a profound and honored calling — one with gifts and challenges that the whole Church needs to understand.

Topics covered include:

What the Bible actually says about celibacy and marriage

Augustine's Confessions and the witness of single Christians throughout history

Paul's teaching in 1 Corinthians 7 — and why it's more countercultural than it first appears

How the Church can better make room for single Christians today

Whether you're single, married, widowed, or somewhere in between, this conversation is for everyone. A Q&A session will follow the lecture.
